Good news: Our 16.75 year-old marriage has outlasted most of the gifts we got for the wedding. Bad news: Three quarters of the things in our house need to be replaced.
The crockpot? Is no longer anything close to non-stick. Every time we use it, we have to soak it, scrub it, put it through the dishwasher, then scrub it again with cream of tartar, which, with a lot of elbow grease, finally gets the remaining yuck off.
The kitchen dishes bit the dust a long time ago, as have most of the set we bought to replace them. (We can’t have guests for dinner. We only have 5 dinner plates.)
The antique toaster still works but it’s on its last legs. Two slots. Not extra wide. Doesn’t really matter what setting you have it on, it all comes out the same. And the cord is hot to the touch after just one round of bread. I like firefighters but I really don’t want to meet some as they try to extinguish my toaster.
The towels are threadbare, sheets…I don’t even know. Griddle, long gone. Spice rack, lost in a move. Glassware, ha! In this house?
Amid all the devastation, though, there is a bright spot. My kids don’t know what it is or how it works, but the iron is still going strong.

LOL. Love it. As I read down the list I mentally went through my things. Hubby and I will hit 16 years in February. I think the one thing that we still have from when we got married is the flat wooden spatula like thing. Heck its even older than our marriage since it was something my parents gave us that I used to cook with as a kid.
Oh, funny! It’s a good thing marriage isn’t about the gifts then! If it was a lot of us would be in trouble.
Soooo, any idea how to kill a toaster that old? My husband got the toaster we have at Goodwill for $5 (the price tag is still on the bottom!) a few years before we got married. That was 11 years ago. And he won’t let me get a new one while we still have a “perfectly good” toaster. It won’t die!
Too funny! And I’m sooooo with you. Everything is breaking. I had to replace threadbare towels several years ago, the toaster, toaster oven and mixer, too. Next year is our 20th anniversary. I think 20 years in today’s world deserves a household shower, don’t you? Now if only everyone else felt that way! LOL Good luck with the iron! Hehe!

LOL, Amy. We’re going on seventeen and a half years and probably our third or fourth toaster. I must be rough on them
. I can identify with all the other things on your list as well. I have a few things that I would have gotten rid of long ago, but there’s something about men (at least my DH). If there’s even an ounce of funtionality remaining…even one thread left on a dang towel…they don’t want to get rid of it. I think I’ve secretly thrown out a few items over the past few years. He’ll never know
.
We’re into our 27th year and are also in the rough on toasters club. We’ve killed 4 toasters and 2 toaster ovens (Kev really likes toast). Toasters last longer. We like coffee more than toast and I’ve lost count of the coffee makers and grinders, but have learned that simpler is better as our worst ever coffee maker was the one with the built-in grinder. It was also the most expensive coffee maker and the only one we gave away before it wore out.
Our best crockpot has been a non-stick rectangular dish that sits on a warming plate. Kevin (strangely enough) chose this particular appliance for his 15 year anniversary gift at work. We use it at least twice a week this time of year. This week for latin chicken, and sauce for spaghetti and meatballs.
The best appliance ever has been the non-stick electric griddle. My eleven year old daughter tried to kill it a couple of Saturdays ago, but its much older and stronger than her.
That is funny, Amy. Next year will be our 20th and we still have a whole bunch of stuff we got as gifts. The pots and pans, toaster, towels …you name it. The one thing I’m missing is my huge roaster. You know … one of those blue things that is big enough to hold the turkey. Can’t find it anywhere. Always keep it in the basement (because you only use it once or twice a year) but it seems to have vanished into thin air. I was putting off buying a new one because I knew the second I did, it would show up. However, with the holidays coming, I was given no choice. Had to buy a new roaster. That was last week and the old hasn’t resurfaced yet.
Enjoyable read. I wish I had the motivation to write such good posts onto my own blog. It is hard.
